Getting to Health through Integrative Practices: (OAJCAM) - Lupine Publishers

Abstract

Traditional medical practitioners far outnumber practitioners of allopathic medicine in most parts of the South World. They are thus, de facto, the world’s most popular form of primary care. This chapter discusses the re-emergence of traditional/integrative1 healthcare around the world. Within ‘post’-colonial societies, traditional health knowledge has re-emerged in the context of nationalist struggles for independence and a growing interest in natural health care, amongst other trends. As South World people2 become more self-reliant, interest in indigenous health practices develops. Concomitantly, as critiques of allopathic medicine’s side-effects develop, interest in natural and spiritual forms of healthcare grows. However, those who can access allopathic care almost always choose to blend it with traditional medicine. This chapter critically explores the fundamental concept of and the increasing popularity of integrative healthcare practices particularly within South World societies. We touch on the re-integration of traditional and modern health knowledge and how this trend is simultaneously occurring all over the planet. While colonialism negatively impacted the work of traditional medical practitioners Shroff et al. [1], in contemporary times, youth as well as elderly people are digging deep into their roots to find answers to modern problems. It is challenging to piece together bits of verbal knowledge handed from one generation to the next so gaps in knowledge inevitably exist. Regardless, knowledge evolves, and changes are made to virtually all practices as a result. As new diseases and problems arise, wholistic health care is trying to adapt to these challenges. Blending the evolved practices of integrated healthcare with modern day conceptualizations of body and mind, today’s wholistic health practitioners have a much better toolkit than they ever had. This bodes well for health promotion, disease prevention, treatment, rehabilitation and palliation of societies around the world.

Investigating China and United States Students Cultural Learning Beliefs: Focus on Habits and Time Factor: (OAJCAM) - Lupine Publishers

Abstract

Chinese students are generally known to be working harder, spending more time on academic activities and having a stronger commitment to educational goals than their American counterparts. The Confucian culture of learning, coupled with social and economic pressures, compel Chinese youths to place much greater emphasis on educational attainment. Drawn on survey data gathered from university students in both the USA and China, this study explores how study habits formed during school years affect time allocation decisions made by university students. We use samples of Shanghai and NYC college students to investigate young adults’ perceptions and attitudes toward the allocation of time between independent academic activities (studying and reading) and non-study activities (social networking, video gaming, and TV watching). The results appear to support claims that Chinese university students spend a greater time on independent academic activities than their US counterparts

Timing in Efficacy of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture: (OAJCAM) - Lupine Publishers

Abstract

Increasing scientific research on traditional Chinese medicine and acupuncture provides science-based explanations like deqi. However, most of the research focuses on diseases instead of following TCM and acupuncture theories about pattern identification. Timing is closely connected with therapeutic effects and surely plays a key role in the clinical efficacy that is often ignored. On the other hand, whether or not timing-related efficacy can be influenced with age, gender, and the processing of materia medica in Chinese herbs and acupuncture needs more attention and research.

Midwife: (OAJCAM) - Lupine Publishers

Midwife by Uqbah Iqbal in Open Access Journal of Complementary & Alternative Medicine in Lupine Publishers

Abstract

The Malay institution is too unique. Various terms related to the individual involved arise based on their respective roles. Among the most popular to date are shaman, shamans, handlers and midwives. Although the field of medicine has grown with many new discoveries of science and technology, midwifery roles have never been affected especially in remote areas. Often midwives are required in urgent moments before the patient is taken to the hospital or clinic. In the cities there are midwives. These midwives are in hospitals or in private clinics. They have specialized qualifications in the field of birth and are more geared towards modern medicine. They are paid and considered as one of the public or private sector employees. For some societies, midwives are highly respected. This is because the average villagers consider the influence of a midwife very strong on the baby at birth. There is a belief that the life or death of the baby depends on the midwife’s own actions. Generally, midwives or callers who are more or less familiar with Tok Bidan or Mak Bidan play a role in welcoming the birth of a baby. Midwives are usually of a relatively old and experienced women in birth.

Basic Health Series: Cancer: (OAJCAM) - Lupine Publishers

Basic Health Series: Cancer by Uqbah Iqbal in Open Access Journal of Complementary & Alternative Medicine in Lupine Publishers

Abstract

This book explains cancer. The name of cancer is not only used to describe one disease, but also for all types of diseases comprising at least 200 different diseases. Many types of cancer can be cured quite easily if the initial treatment is given. More than half of existing cancer can be treated now though others are difficult to treat when in severe stages. All cancers have some of the same features. First, some cells in one part of the body begin to grow in irregular ways. The cells divide and multiply very fast. This results in the accumulation of abnormal cells called tumors. Second, abnormal cells can spread to other nearby tissues. Sometimes the cells can also spread to other parts of the body far from the original cancer cells. Third, the cells themselves have an abnormal structure. Some tumors are called benign and not cancerous. Normal mumps are benign tumors. Something that tumors will become cancerous only when the cells function abnormally. Most tumors may be triggered by a chemical or a virus called a carcinogen. This carcinogen interferes with DNA-controlled substances.
