Diabetes, Dipeptidyl Peptidase IV and Wound Healing: from Basic Science to Therapeutic Possibilities by Lara Baticic Pucar in Open Access Journal of Biomedical Engineering and Biosciences in Lupine Publishers

Diabetes mellitus, a chronic metabolic disease characterized by different pathological outcomes as a consequence of unsettled hyperglycemia, often accompanied with various complications such as chronic ulcers, represents a major socio-economic health problem. Dipeptidyl peptidase IV or CD26 molecule (DPP IV/CD26), is an omnipresent transmembrane protein with significant involvements in different physiological and pathological processes. It has been recognized as a therapeutic option in the treatment of hyperglycemia, especially in patients suffering from type 2 diabetes, given its capability to regulate the biological activity of incretins, which are major regulators of glucose homeostasis. Furthermore, DPP IV/CD26 has been indicated to be involved in the regulation of inflammatory processes as well as cell proliferation and angiogenesis. New scientific evidence shows that inhibition of DPP IV/CD26 leads to a more efficacious healing of chronic ulcers in diabetic patients as well as in mice models of wounded tissue restoration. However, the role of DPP IV/CD26 in the process of wound healing in hyperglycemia is not entirely known. Our aim was to summarize most important findings on the involvement of DPP IV/CD26 in the regulation of glycemia as well as tissue regeneration and reparation. This work reviews basic biochemical mechanisms and therapeutic possibilities of DPP IV/CD26 inhibition as a good candidate in the therapy of diabetic wound healing.

In the era of post genomics, performing a computational analysis to understand the pharmacogenomic based regulation of Psoriasis with respect to the principles of data mining and constructing a regulatory network with respect to the principles of systems biology and analyzing the network with respect to the principles of test statistic remains a challenging task to execute. The challenge was approached by identifying the associated genes of Psoriasis from PharmGkb and it was followed by identifying the associated regulators (MicroRNAs and Transcription Factors) from PharmacomiR/ RegNetworks. Finally the Compatibility of miRNA in regulatory networks was analyzed by the statistical measures of miRmap.

Effects of Personal Health Record on Patient Healthcare Outcomes: (OAJBEB) - Lupine Publishers

Effects of Personal Health Record on Patient Healthcare Outcomes by Bonita R Payne and Sajeesh Kumar in Open Access Journal of Biomedical Engineering and Biosciences (OAJBEB) in Lupine Publishers

Abstract

Electronic transmission of data is on the rise, due to the Affordable Care Act and provisions to make healthcare information more accessible, complete, and transparent. The Personal Health Record (PHR) application is a tool used to provide assistance to the goal of patient-centered and patient-centric care. Its purpose is to encourage consumers to become more participatory and informed in their healthcare treatment and healthcare needs. Since its inception, it has been questionable as to whether consumers and providers are seeing any improvements in the services provided or the care rendered. Since, the development and implementation of PHR applications, there has been some resistance from consumers for concerns of privacy and security of their information. This paper will discuss the uses of the PHR among consumers and providers and whether its use has impacted accessibility, services, and overall healthcare treatment/outcomes.

Challenges in the Field of Biomedical Engineering Research: (OAJBEB) - Lupine Publishers

Challenges in the Field of Biomedical Engineering Research by Neeraj Sharma in Open Access Journal of Biomedical Engineering and Biosciences (OAJBEB) in Lupine Publishers

Abstract

Biomedical Engineering is the most recent and challenging field of engineering that involves applying the principles, knowledge and approaches from all major fields of sciences and engineering to provide medical/clinical experts with the accurate tools for diagnostics, clinical studies and treatment. Biomedical Engineering in itself is a highly research oriented and interdisciplinary field. Biomedical engineering derives its principle and knowledge from all major engineering and science branch such as electronic, electrical, instrumentation, mechanical, computers etc. and chemistry, physics, nuclear physics, biology, pharmacology, physiology, etc. Whenever some new technology is developed its application in biomedical engineering is always searched. For example, the development of optical fibers in late 1980s has led to the development of endoscope indeed a useful device for abdomen examination and surgery applications. Further, most of the high end imaging systems such as CT scan, MR imaging have been only possible because of tremendous advancement in computer technology both at the hardware and software end. The list is long and it is not possible to cover all these in the present article. Finally, we can say that it is only because of technological advancement that we have been successfully able to design and develop accurate diagnostic devices (Ultra sound scan, CT scan, ECG, EMG and EEG machines etc.), prosthetic devices (pacemaker, heart valves, artificial limbs), treatment and surgery devices (LASER based surgery systems, electrosurgical units, radiotherapy systems, Lithotripters etc). Thus, advancement in the field of science and technology from all fronts has contributed a lot to the research and development of biomedical engineering.

Biomechanical Engineering Analysis of Glaucoma Micro Stent Implant with Check Valve for Intraocular Pressure Reduction (IOP) by Finite Element Method (FEM): (OAJBEB) - Lupine Publishers

Biomechanical Engineering Analysis of Glaucoma Micro Stent Implant with Check Valve for Intraocular Pressure Reduction (IOP) by Finite Element Method (FEM) by Ö Karaçalı in Open Access Journal of Biomedical Engineering and Biosciences (OAJBEB) in Lupine Publishers

Abstract

Biomechanical factors affect the design model of glaucoma micro stent (GMS) geometry, material and shape in correcting treatment of high intraocular pressure (IOP). The goal of this research was to characterize the biomechanics of the GMS using computational finite element method. In this research, the model for nano-composite materials will be investigated for analyzing the material behavior of the GMS with check valve used in the intraocular fluid evacuation system which is not made until now to control the intraocular pressure. It has not been reported about what impacts on GMS with check valve design and material selection to ensure discharge of ocular fluid in intraocular pressure (IOP), ensuring fluid flow continuity. Finite element Analysis simulation methodology for realization of accurate structural and aqueous humor (AH) behavior micro model during this analysis provided valuable results of useful data of GMS material behavior that are time consuming and expensive to determine otherwise. The check valve provided a control mechanism for AH pressure to regulate the IOP. For this reason, material deformation von-Mises and fluid flow behaviors model was developed. To achieve these, finite element analysis were employed to calculate compressive stresses and equivalent von-Mises stress criteria as well as the analysis by the strength of material’s experimental procedure in laboratory conditions. A finite element analysis (FEA) of GMS under very low cyclic loading conditions is presented. The results of modeling were verified with experimental data for biocompatible and biodegradable GMS from nano-composite material. This research provided a data set for preventing glaucoma disease and improving intraocular tension by new design of GMS.

Biomedical Research: On-Going Challenges: (OAJBEB) - Lupine Publishers

Biomedical Research: On-Going Challenges by Kingsley Akarowhe in Open Access Journal of Biomedical Engineering and Biosciences (OAJBEB) in Lupine Publishers

Abstract
Biomedical research is aimed at proffering solutions to problems facing biomedical profession, so as to enhance productivity of biomedical practitioners. Biomedical profession in recent time has not achieved major successes for which it is directed to achieve. This is often due to a number a bedevilling on-going challenge. It is due to this fact that the research take a proactive step in investigating these challenges which are inaccurate/inadequate statistical data;, lack of sufficient awareness; non-responsiveness of respondents; and lack of finance.
